Sometimes I think similes are over rated, but I just read one that shot the image into my mind so quickly that I could not help but be impressed.
I am currently reading a book by Kristen Heitzmann called Fallen. It is about a woman who stumbles out of the Hanalei Mountains on the island of Kauai with amnesia. She is plagued with a sense of urgency and frustratingly tries to remember her past. More importantly she tries to remember what happened to her on the mountain, and why she has a head injury. There are many layers to this story and I am not here to review the book, but I loved one of the comparisons where she compares her memory to Swiss Cheese. She remembers chapters of her past but they don’t make sense becuase so many details are missing. Like the holes in a slice of Swiss cheese.
As a writer I just think the simile works perfectly. Love it!
